Our Trips
Every school year, UM Alternative Breaks organizes service-learning experiences, each centering on a different social issue. Each group of 8-10 students spends several weeks learning about the issue, location, and nonprofit partner(s) before being immersed in the community during their break. Students have two opportunities to go an alternative break as we offer trips during students' Fall Break (FB) in October and during Spring Break (SB) in March.
Our FB groups travel by car to serve our local central and south Florida communities while our SB groups travel by air to serve communities in other states across the nation. During all trips, regardless of the season, students engage in meaningful, hands-on service and reflect upon their experiences and the root causes of their issue. Past trips include serving as a camp counselor for a child with developmental disabilities in Texas, maintaining land in the Snowbird Cherokee community in Tennessee, and repairing damaged homes in Key West.
